Time to couchsurf!
I’ve stayed in dozens of hostels while traveling through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Plus, in South-East Asia, you can get a private bedroom at a low cost hotel for only $2-5. However, now that I was going to explore Australia, I had to figure out an economic and affordable way to travel. Some hostels in Australia cost $20-$30/night for a bed in a dorm. That definitely adds up if you are traveling continuously for several months. Plus, you just interact with other travellers instead of locals.
So, what’s the solution?
I have been on Hospitality Club, Global Freeloaders, Servas, and Couchsurfing for a while but hadn’t used any of these sites much to stay with local people. This all changed in Australia. From the moment I arrived in Darwin, I started emailing hosts in all the places that I would be traveling while exploring the East Coast from Cairns to Brisbane to Sydney. I was able to stay in several people’s homes and had some very unique experiences from staying with Mormon Missionaries, to Gay Nudists, to Jamaican Rastafarians, and more.
In Sydney, I even managed to stay with a host for 2 weeks while I settled down and found my own apartment. This same host eventually came to Canada and we were able to return the favour and host him. While traveling to Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth again so many hospitable Aussies hosted me on their couches or spare bedrooms. In New Zealand, my good friend Fotios and I stayed with such friendly Kiwi hosts in Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington, Auckland, and beyond. These couch surfing adventures have really shown me how hospitable people are at a deep heart level.
All together, I have stayed in over 50 homes in Australia, New Zealand, the US, and Canada through Couch Surfing. I have slept in couches, spare bedrooms, and even a $5 million mansion in Hollywood, California. I have made dozens of friends who I still keep in touch with on Facebook. Some have even come and stayed with us. Plus, now, in Vancouver, we are able to host travellers at our home! What goes around, comes around!
